And, after his consistent understated yet effective performances so far, the manager's decision to bring him into a welcoming environment has been justified.
'Nicky's been absolutely fantastic,' said Bruce. 'Especially on Saturday when we were looking for our big players to perform.
'Without doubt, he will improve. He looks to me as if he is enjoying his football and that's important to him.
'He doesn't want to be associated with losing and that shows in his whole approach.
'If that rubs off on those around him, all the better.'"
